Willow weaving, a time-honoured craft within the UK, intertwines artistry with practicality, its roots can be traced back thousands of years. This ancient technique, which involves the weaving of flexible willow branches into various structures. This skill  has played a vital role in British culture, economy, and rural life. Beginnings as a necessary skill for survival to its place today as a truly respected art form, willow weaving’s history in the UK is rich, fascinating and shows true longevity.

Willow weaving in the UK can be traced back to the Neolithic period, that around 4000 BC, where early Britons first utilized the technique to create basic structures. These early Britons relied on willow for creating essential items like fishing traps, baskets, and even dwellings, using the material’s natural flexibility and abundance to their advantage. Archaeological evidence, such as the famous “Sweet Track” in Somerset, a prehistoric causeway made of woven wood, indicates that the use of willow and other flexible woods was a common practice among ancient communities.
