This stark winter tree is made entirely of 22 carat gold leaf. The gold leaf is laid on base of gesso, which raised the gold slightly above the paper adding both sparkle and texture to the piece.

 The gesso has to be made by hand in small quantities and uses the same process and recipe as those used by the monks and scribes who created the illuminated manuscripts such the Book of Kells and the Lindisfarne Gospels. 

 This is a slow painstaking process as each stage requires time to dry before the next step can be taken.

Each leaf is individually gilded by hand.

Information On Gesso used in Winter Trees:

 In the 14th century, Giotto, the notable Italian painter, used a finishing gesso of parchment glue and slaked plaster of paris. In medieval tempera painting, background areas intended for gilding were built up into low relief with gesso duro (hard gesso), a less absorbent composition also used for frame moldings, with patterns often pressed into the gesso with small carved woodblocks.
